Does Michigan grant Alimony?

A.  More Properly referred to as Spousal Support it may be awarded
to either spouse for their support and maintenance after the divorce.
It is based on the education level and financial circumstances of the
divorcing spouses. The needs of one spouse and the ability of the
other spouse to pay are the primary factors in determining Spousal
Support.  Spousal Support may be paid in a lump sum payment of
money or the award of some property.

How long will it last?

A. Each case is unique but most awards are now for only a limited
amount of time in order to help the other party get back on their feet
and get situated in their new single life and income.  Awards can be
modifiable or non-modifiable.
